Privacy Policy

This policy explains what personal information Journey2UK collects, why we collect it and what we do with it. We have written it in plain English. We follow UK data protection law, including the UK GDPR.

Who we are

We are the “controller” of your personal information. This means we decide how and why it is used. You can contact us at hello@journey2uk.com.

What information we collect

If you create an account

We collect your email address, the dates you sign in, the jobs and scholarships you save, and any deadline reminders you set. Your account has no password. We use one-time sign-in links instead.

If you sign up for email alerts or our newsletter

We collect your email address and what you asked for, such as a job keyword or a place. We also record when we last emailed you.

If you contact us or use our employer form

We collect your name (if you give it), your email address, your company and job details, and anything else you tell us. If you email us, we keep the emails so we can reply and keep a record.

When you use the website

We collect basic information about visits, such as the pages you view, the website you came from, the type of device you use (phone, tablet or computer) and your rough country. We do not use this to find out your name.

Our web server and security service also record technical details, such as your IP address. We use these to keep the site safe and working properly.

Our mobile app

The Journey2UK app for Android uses the same account and the same information as the website. This section covers what is different in the app.

Signing in

You can use the app without an account. If you create one, we ask for your email address and email you a 6-digit code. There is no password. We store only a scrambled copy (a “hash”) of the code and of your sign-in token, and a code stops working after 10 minutes.

What is kept in your account

  • the jobs and scholarships you save
  • the deadline reminders and email alerts you set up
  • the applications you track, including any notes you write. Only you can see your notes. We do not read them, and they are never put in emails or notifications
  • the date you last signed in

Notifications on your phone

If you allow notifications, your phone is given a notification address by Google and by Expo, the service we use to send them. We store that address and your choices (new jobs, new scholarships and reminders). If you are signed in, the address is linked to your account so we can send your reminders. You can change your choices in the app (Account, then Notifications) or turn notifications off in your phone’s settings.

Anonymous usage information

The app records which screens are used, what people search for, which jobs and scholarships are viewed, and whether Apply is tapped. This uses a random number the app makes for itself. It is not your name, your email address or your advertising ID, and it is not linked to your account. We use it to improve the app. You can switch it off at any time in the app (Account, then Share anonymous usage data). We delete it after 90 days.

Crash reports

If the app crashes, it sends a report to Sentry, a service that helps us find and fix problems. The report contains the error, the version of the app, and your phone model and Android version. It does not contain your email address, your account details or what you searched for.

Adverts in the app

The app shows adverts. Some come from Google AdMob, and some are sponsored adverts we place ourselves. Google may use your phone’s advertising ID and other information to show and measure adverts. Where the law requires it, the app asks for your consent before showing adverts that use this information. You can reset your advertising ID, or switch off personalised adverts, in your phone’s settings (Settings, then Google, then Ads). Our own sponsored adverts do not track you. We only count how many times each one is shown and tapped.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account in the app (Account, then Delete my account) or on our website at journey2uk.com/delete-account. We then delete your account and everything linked to it.

Why we use your information

We use your information:

  • to run your account and send the emails you asked for
  • to keep the site safe, fix problems and stop misuse
  • to understand how the site is used, so we can improve it
  • to show adverts that help pay for the site
  • to answer your messages
  • to follow the law

Our legal reasons are: your consent (for example, when you sign up for alerts), providing the service you asked for, our legitimate interests (for example, keeping the site secure and improving it), and our legal duties.

Cookies and similar technologies

A cookie is a small file that a website stores on your device. This is what we use:

  • Sign-in cookie. When you sign in, we set a cookie so the site remembers you. It lasts up to 30 days. Your account needs it to work.
  • Saved items in your browser. If you save a job or scholarship without signing in, your browser keeps it on your device. We cannot see it until you sign in.
  • Analytics cookies. We use Google Analytics to count visits and see how people use the site.
  • Advertising cookies. Our advertising partners, such as Google, may use cookies to show and measure adverts.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block the sign-in cookie, you will not be able to stay signed in. To learn how Google uses information from sites that use its services, see Google’s partner sites page.

Who we share your information with

We do not sell your personal information. We do not give your email address to employers. We only share information with companies that help us run the site:

  • our hosting and server providers, who store the website and its data
  • Cloudflare, which helps keep the site fast and safe
  • our email provider, which sends the emails you ask for
  • Google, for analytics and advertising, and to deliver notifications to Android phones
  • Expo, which sends notifications to phones for us
  • Sentry, which receives crash reports from the app

These companies can only use your information to provide their services. For Google advertising, Google’s own terms also apply. We may also share information if the law says we must, or to protect our rights.

Sending information outside the UK

Some of the companies above are based outside the UK, or handle data outside the UK. When this happens, we make sure there are proper protections in place, as UK law requires.

How long we keep your information

  • Your account: until you delete it. When you delete your account, we remove your saved items, your reminders and your email alerts.
  • Email alerts: until you unsubscribe.
  • Sign-in links: they expire after 15 minutes, and we delete old ones.
  • Messages and employer forms: for as long as we need them to deal with your request and keep a record.
  • Website usage information: only for as long as it is useful for the reasons above.
  • App usage information: 90 days, then it is deleted automatically.
  • Phone notification addresses: until you turn notifications off, delete your account, or your phone stops accepting them.
  • Sign-in codes (app): they stop working after 10 minutes and are deleted soon after.

Your rights

Under UK law, you have the right to:

  • ask for a copy of your information
  • ask us to correct information that is wrong
  • ask us to delete your information
  • ask us to limit how we use your information
  • object to how we use your information
  • ask for your information in a format you can reuse (this applies in some cases)
  • take back your consent at any time

You can delete your account yourself on your Account page. You can stop emails with the Unsubscribe link in any email. For anything else, email us at hello@journey2uk.com. We will reply within one month. There is no fee, unless a request is clearly unreasonable.

If you are unhappy with how we use your information, please tell us first. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). You can do this at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or by phone on 0303 123 1113.

Keeping your information safe

We use secure connections (HTTPS). Sign-in links work once and expire quickly. We store sign-in and session codes only in a scrambled form. No website can be 100% secure, but we work hard to protect your information.

Children

Journey2UK is not meant for children under 16. We do not knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child has given us their information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Links to other websites

Our site links to other websites, such as employers, universities and GOV.UK. We are not responsible for how they use your information. Please read their privacy policies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page. If the change is important, we will tell you on the website.
